Oceans Edge

A sculptural garden exploring the relationship between New Zealand’s coastline, culture, and identity.

Inspired by landscapes shaped by wind, water, and time, Oceans Edge reflects the deep connection between people and the ocean — a place of memory, movement, and meaning.

The Journey

Arrival

Grounded in the textures and forms of the natural landscape, the journey begins with planting and materials that reflect the quiet strength of the land.

Threshold

At the heart of the garden, a sculptural shell pavilion forms a symbolic passage — a moment of transition between land and ocean.

Immersion

Water, movement, and reflection bring the ocean to life, creating a multi-sensory experience shaped by sound, light, and flow.

Ocean Edge celebrates New Zealand’s stunning coastline and the role it plays in shaping the nation’s identity.

Inspired by the powerful waves that sculpt our shores, the design features dynamic steel lines that capture the ocean’s movement. These flowing forms are anchored by a seafood platter, symbolising the strong trade relationship between New Zealand and China.

A meandering path, guided by bold inserts, draws visitors towards a striking centrepiece –an abstract shell crafted from bamboo. This form embodies New Zealand’s rich marine life while reflecting the shared appreciation of the ocean’s beauty between our two cultures. Through this design, we highlight the enduring connection between New Zealand and China, united by the sea.

New Zealand on the Global Design Stage

Representing New Zealand in the international landscape design competition “The Masters,” this project brings together seven other world-class designers on a global stage. It is both an honour and a privilege to take part, reflecting years of dedication to the craft.

Co-designed with Alayna Bradbury, the project is a true collaboration, supported by a bespoke soundtrack created with James Moore and composed by Will Henderson — bringing together design, storytelling, and family connection.

Despite challenges, from language barriers to building the installation by hand, the progress has been rewarding. With the goal of achieving another Gold for New Zealand, the project reflects resilience, creativity, and collaboration
